Today, we’re thrilled to announce a major milestone in Taiko’s journey: the integration of Zero-Knowledge (ZK) proofs into our mainnet, strengthening our robust multi-proof based rollup. This enhancement complements our existing multi-proof architecture, which includes TEE proofs, establishing one of the most comprehensive security systems in the Layer 2 space. With industry-leading zkVMs from Succinct and RISC Zero, Taiko’s mainnet reaches a new level of security and scalability.
Our vision and approach to multi-proofs are outlined in Taiko’s Approach to Multi-Proofs. As a based rollup, Taiko supports multiple proof tiers, with each tier accommodating various proof types to address potential defects or bugs in prover software.
Until now, Taiko relied solely on SGX proofs for fast proof generation and state verification. With the integration of Succinct and RISC Zero zkVMs alongside SGX, we are making significant progress in our multi-proof journey. Now, 3 out of every 100 blocks proposed by Taiko Beats—our fallback proposer—will now require ZK proofs, gradually transitioning to a full ZK-Rollup by the end of 2025.
Unless announced otherwise, ZK requirements will apply to all proposers on January 1, 2025, with an increased target of 10-25% ZK coverage. If you are or intend to become a Taiko block proposer, now is the time to set up your ZK prover. We encourage proposers to contact us for guidance on configuring ZK provers and to explore our Hekla testnet and mainnet configurations to become familiar with Taiko’s multi-proof design and proof-tier setup. Please note: proposers without ZK capability by the deadline will need to pause block proposals to avoid slashing.
It’s important to note that Taiko does not offer ZK proof generation services. Proposers should reach out to Succinct or RISC Zero to arrange proving services or prepare suitable proving hardware, mainly GPUs.
While TEEs remain essential guardians within our system, we view ZK proofs as the ultimate goal for security in the crypto industry. Our roadmap includes several key initiatives: expanding ZK proof coverage to all blocks, integrating additional zkVMs and TEEs, and continually advancing our multi-proof design. This is just the beginning of a more secure, scalable future for Taiko.
